Death of George W. Ash. A Highly Respected Pioneer of Billings Passes Away
It is with profound sorrow, shared by a large circle of friends, that we chronicle the demise of one of the pioneers of Billings, who enjoyed the esteem and confidence of all who knew him, and whose memory as a husband, father and a friend will long remain green in the community which knew him best loved him most.
After an illness of two weeks, borne with patience and bravely, George W. Ash passed away at 2 o'clock Monday morning.
The funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at the home. It was largely attended by sorrowing friends, who sympathized deeply with grief stricken widow and children in their bereavement.
George W. Ash was born in Milton, Missouri, 61 years ago, and married in 1858 the partner of his joys and sorrows, who now mourns his departure. He came to Montana 16 years ago and settled in Coulson, as the old town was called, and when the railway came along and Billings came into existence, he moved to the new town and has been one of our best known citizens ever since. Courteous to a degree, kind and sympathetic in his nature, scrupulously honest in all his dealings, it is no wonder that every man with whom he came in contact was his friend. Careful, thrifty with a good head for business, he accumulated a competency, and had the satisfaction of knowing that he left those dependent upon him well provided for.
He leaves a widow, a daughter, Mrs. Sam Garvin, and a son, James L. Ash, all of this city; and four sisters in the east and one brother, Hon. Thomas S. Ash of Livingston.
