A hero for all time, rest in peace.Houk was a catcher working his way through the Yankees' farm system when the U.S. entered World War II. He enlisted in the armed forces, became an Army Ranger, and rose to Major (the source of his Yankee nickname). He was a combat veteran of Bastogne and the Battle of the Bulge, and was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and the Silver Star with oak clusters

Happy Belated Birthday, Mr. Houk. You were, are, and will always represent everything which is right with the national pastime. Thank you for your dedicated service to our country and your exploits as a baseball manager. My father and I had the honor and privilege of meeting you at a convention. You were gracious and a gentleman, and accommodating to all of the fans there to see you that day. Thank you. May God continue to bless and watch over you and those you love then, now, and always. RIP

I met Ralph Houk at a St.Louis card show and was blessed to have a picture taken with him.He told me that he was the manager of the 1961 Yankees and of course, being a historian of the 1961 Yanks,it is a fact that I was aware of as I watched the Yanks on TV from 1959 to this present day.I had a friend with me who told Houk that "He( meaning me) knows more about the Yankees than you do !" Houk did do a funny thing, which was when I gave him a bat and asked him if he would put 1961 Yankees WS Champs and also add "The Major" to the autograph,he put the bat on his knees behind the table and added 1962 and 1963 WS Champs.I knew immediately that in 1963 the Yanks lost to the LA Dodgers 4 games to none.My friend told me as we were walking away,"See, you do know more about the Yankees than he does" I felt at ease talking to him and it was an enjoyable experience. He belongs in the Manager's wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame.He has a 1,619-1,531 record as a manager in his 20 year career as manager. His 11 seasons( 1 season was only 139 games) as the Yankees manager he amassed a record of 944-806.He had 3 pennant winners( 1961,1962 and 1963) and won 2 World Series titles in 1961 and 1962.RIP peace #35 and manage the Yanks to more titles in Heaven.Bless you.It was such a pleasure to meet you in person. Joe
