It was said of him that he was a man of sterling integrity. He was very conscientious, and nothing could move him from what he saw to be right. Everything that helped to make men better Christians and better citizens had his hearty sympathy and his enthusiastic support.

He was zealous and uncompromising friend of the Temperance movement, cheerfully devoting to its success his energies and his means. He was a most consistent and valued member of the Central Congregational Church of Madison. He removed from Pawlet, Vermont with his parents to Madison, Ohio in 1830.
