Ensign Tom Hallowell was shot down flying a Grumman F6F-3 "Hellcat" fighter over Guam`s Orote airfield. Two high flying Zekes from the enemy Air Gp 652 dropped on the Grumman, killing Tom. He was flying off the light Aircraft Carrier San Jacinto (CVL-30) as part of Air Group VF-51. The San Jacinto was part of Vice Adm Marc MITSCHER`s FAST CARRIER TASK FORCE 58. The battle on June 19 overall was known as "MARIANAS TURKEY SHOOT" because of the large number of enemy planes shot down.
Thomas`s parents were Robert Medford HALLOWELL and Ethel Knight BALL married 26 Nov 1914 in Bucks Co. PA.
