Mrs. Joseph R. Baker
Lucy J. Shields was born in Fulton County, Illinois, June 3, 1857, (transcriber added: to Robert Shields and Lavina Smith) and passed away at her home near Grand River Feb. 15, 1914, aged 56 years, 8 months and 9 days. In childhood, she moved with her parents to Missouri and later to Iowa, where on October 30, 1878, she was united in marriage to Joseph R. Baker. To this union was born seven children; Laura Josephine De La, Jennie Francis, who died at the age of six months, Beulah Olive, Seth Sampson, Marietta Chandler, Richard Leroy, Karl Franklin. All the children were here at the time of her death, excepting Laura , who lives in South Dakota and Marietta, who lives in North Dakota. Mrs. Baker was a kind and loving wife and mother and leaves to mourn her loss, a devoted husband, six children, four grandchildren, one sister who resides in Oregon, one brother in Oklahoma, and other relatives. She united with the Methodist Church when young. While living in Missouri there being no Methodist Church near her home, she united with the United Brethren Church of which she remained a consistent member. She will be sadly missed in both home and community for she was well known and highly esteemed.

The funeral services were conducted from the home Tuesday, Feb. 17th at ten o'clock, by Rev. Cunningham, interment being in Oak Hill Cemetery.
