Wilfred "Woos" Berlin, 65, of Wilmington, N.C., died Thursday, June 4, 2009, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Woos was born May 4, 1944 in Plainfield to the late Paul and Willetta Ord Berlin. Mr. Berlin grew up and spent most of his life in Normandy Beach, where he was a lifeguard, director of lifeguards, and all-around water enthusiast. He retired from IBM after a 25-year career as a sales executive and moved to North Carolina, where he became an Executive in Residence at the University of North Carolina Wilmington Cameron School of Business. He taught Sales & Marketing, but his true passion and expertise was mentoring young adults. Mr. Berlin was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Wilmington, N.C.; on the Board of Directors for the UNCW Cameron School of Business; a former deacon and elder at First Presbyterian Church of Mendham; and a former member of the N.C. State Board for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
His only brother, George Ellis, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Rita Berlin of Wilmington, and their son, Jeffrey Paul Berlin of Half Moon Bay, Calif.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 18 at The Presbyterian Church, Forman Ave., Point Pleasant Beach.
