Virgil A. Bower, 84, a native of Westport and longtime resident of Greensburg, died at 8:40 p.m. Saturday in Hospitality Nursing Center here. In failing health the past six months, he had been seriously ill a month.

He was born December 27, 1890, the son of Benjamin and Sarah Jane Gillibrand Bower. Most of his life was spent in Greensburg, where he worked at the former Cyclone Fence Company plant until retirement in 1957. He lived in California from 1961 through 1967.

Mr. Bower was an active member of the First Baptist Church here, singing in the choir and assisting with administrative durites several years. He also belonged to the Knights of Pythias, Red Men's and Masonic lodges here.

He was married at Greensburg June 10, 1913 to Myrtle Moulton, who died March 2, 1967.

Surviving are four sons, William C. Bower, Greensburg, John M. Bower, Indianapolis, and Clifford B. and James W. Bower, Long Beach, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. Arnold (Rebecca) Lee Gig Harbor, Wash., and Mrs. Mickey (Velma) Mangano, Los Angeles, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Bertha Robbins, Greensburg; 16 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by several brothers, John, William, David, Frank, Louis, Grover and George Bower, and two sisters, Mrs. Flora Hul and Mrs. Della Clark.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles C. Baxter, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Burke's Chapel Cemetery south of Greensburg. Visitation began at 4 p.m. Monday. The Masonic Lodge will hold a ritualistic service at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
