Son of Jeremiah and Sarah Caroline (Reed) Rudyard, Henry Clay Rudyard was born in Bryantsville, Lawrence County, Indiana on November 23, 1866.

In 1879, at the age of 13, he ran away from home and rode a horse out west to the territory around Nebraska and Colorado. In 1890 he came back to Indiana carrying a tiny black and white puppy in his pocket and riding his horse yet.

He settled in Maysville and married Mary Frances DeVies in 1892. The collie pup grew to be a fine large family pet and a friend. In 1900 it got run over by a train and killed.

Henry worked in and around Washington, Indiana and made several violins. Two of these are still in the family. Frances Wilson England has one and Evelyn Nash Gordon has the other one.

This couple had had five children: Lilla Jane, Daisy Kathryn, Clarence Jefferson, Nellie Belle and Virginia Jewel Delaine.
