Braham (MN) Journal, 4 January 1945, page 1: "Aged Resident of Grass Lake Laid at Rest Last Friday. Funeral rites for one of the community's oldest residents, Mrs. Mathilda Ekstrand of Grass Lake, were conducted last Friday with a family service at noon at the Rock Funeral Home, Braham, preceding the ceremony in the Grasston Baptist church where she had been a member since in 1895. Close to 90 years of age, she had passed away in her home Christmas day after a year of gradually failing health. The Ekstrand family had lived at Grass Lake for almost 50 years. Born in Sundsocken, Ostergotland, Sweden April 22, 1855, Mrs. Ekstrand (nee Gustava Mathilda Sandell) left her native country for the United States with her parents in 1875. They made their home at first in St. Paul where she was married November 17, 1883 to Lewis Ekstrand. The couple continued their residence there until moving here in February 1895. Of their six children two sons and one daughter died in infancy, and Mr. Ekstrand passed away in 1899. Surviving their mother are two daughters, Edith at home and Laura of St. Paul, and one son, George, at home. There are also three nephews, four nieces, and other relatives. The Rev. R.O. Hansen officiated at the last rites and vocal selections were by Pastor and Mrs. Hansen. Janice Forrestad, Reuben Nelson, Robert Nelson, Carl Nordquist, Victor Nyman and A.T. Peterson were pall bearers. Interment was made in the Grasston Baptist Cemetery."
