Commander, Port Here In War One Dies
Saratoga, Calif., Dec. 16. - Major Gen. Grote Hutcheson, United States Army, retired, died in his home here Tuesday at the age of 86. Born in Ohio, General Hutcheson was graduated in 1884 from West Point, where he was a classmate of Gen. John J. Pershing. During his 40 years as an Army officer, General Hutcheson served against the Indians in Arizona, was adjutant general of the Puerto Rican campaign in the Spanish-American War and a member of the China Relief Expedition of 1900. He was secretary to the Military Service Governor of the Philippine Islands in 1901-02 and judge advocate of the Department of the East in 1903-04. For four years he was a member of the general staff corps. During World War I General Hutcheson organized the port of embarkation at Newport News, and later was commander of an infantry division at Camp Custer, Mich. He retired from the Army with the rank of major general July 20, 1924. He was a member of the Army-Navy Club in Washington and the San Francisco Union League Club. His wife survives. A funeral service and burial will be held at the Arlington National Cemetery at Washington.
