Alice Newton Foster age 93, born June 7, 1905 in Colquitt County, Georgia.
She was educated in the public schools there and graduated from Norman Institute in 1924.
She came to Jacksonville in 1926 and took employment at Union Terminal Warehouse. Adventuresome, Alice traveled to New York on a coastal schooner in 1928.
Alice married Guy Foster in 1931 whom she met at a boarding house on Duval Street. She and Guy remained here and reared two sons, David Morris and Arthur Guy. At Lake Forest Baptist Church she started a library and was a teacher. She was a Den Mother and a Andrew Jackson High Band parent.
Her husband predeceased her in 1960.
A life-long student of South Georgia rural history, Alice wrote and published ``The Lives and Letters of our South Georgia Farm Family'', a book tracing the history of her family. She did so in memory of her parents and for her brothers, sisters and their children all of whom she deeply loved.
Alice taught her sons, as she had been taught, the value of kindness, lifelong learning and respect for all races and religions.
Survivors include sister Jackie Newton Bailey of Norman Park, Georgia, sons David of Jacksonville and Arthur of Portland, Oregon, sisters-in-law Wilma Foster, Nell Foster and Opal Newton, grandchildren Kelly, Lisa, Scott, Lesley, David and Todd, and four great grandchildren.
