Gerald Joseph Hagarty was born on June 13, 1943, in Greene, Butler Co., Iowa. He was a son of Donald and Berniece (Dougherty) Hagarty.

He received his education in country schools, Sacred Heart Academy and Greene High School. He graduated in 1961.

Jerry hauled milk for Urban Kelly and Ron Schuknecht before being hired by Barth Chevrolet in 1976. He later established Jerry's Automotive, located near the family farm, where he worked until stricken with cancer in the fall of 2009. While working as a mechanic he also hauled milk part time for Tim McConnell of Cresco and made many friends along his route.

Jerry was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Greene where he served with the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Library Board and volunteered time delivering meals on wheels. He enjoyed race cars and restoring vintage automobiles.

Jerry passed away peacefully on Monday, February 15, 2010, at the Liebe Care Center in Greene from complications of kidney cancer.

A Funeral Mass for Gerald Joseph "Jerry" Hagarty, 66, of Greene, was held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 19, 2010, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Greene. Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiated. Burial is in the St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Greene.

Visitation was from 4:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday, February 18, 2010, at Reid's Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St., Greene. There was a Scriptural Wake Service at 7:00 p.m.

Jerry is survived by two brothers and two sisters: Jack (Jeannie) Hagarty of Racine, WI; Tom Hagarty of Des Plaines, IL; Renee (Fred) Billman of Racine, WI; Janet (Gene) Hagarty of Iowa Falls; and, several nieces and nephews. Jerry leaves many friends, but he will be especially missed by Dean and Kay Brinkman of Greene, Brenda Steidl of Mason City and Kenny Knapp of Greene.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents.
