Former Mayor Died Here on Sunday
WELL KNOWN CITIZEN SUCCUMBS AFTER A BRIEF ILLNESS AT HIS HOME ON SOUTH HARRIS STREET
After an acute illness of several days with organic troubles, Mr. J. Sanford Adams died at his residence in this city Sunday morning, at the age of seventy years. He was a native of this county, and had lived in Sandersville nearly all of his life. He first served the city as Chief of Police and later was elected to two terms as Mayor, having filled the offices in a most satisfactory manner. He was interested in farming and spent most of his time in looking after the several farms which he and his wife owned. He was a many of unusually kind heart and was highly esteemed by all who knew him, and the news of his death was heard with genuine sorrow by a large circle of intimate friends and acquaintances in various parts of the county. He is survived by his wife and three stepchildren, Mr. Martin Harris of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Mrs. Richard Matthews of Sandersville, and Mrs. Katie Harris Holmes of Atlanta and one sister, Mrs. B.R. Sessions of Tennille.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. E.G. Orahood and Rev. Jno. H. Allen at the residence Monday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, after which the burial took place in the city cemetery with Masonic honors, Mr. Adams having been a prominent member of this organization for many years past.
