John Erwin Newton was the youngest son to survive in the family of Ebenezer James and Sarah (Sallie)(Halliburton)Newton. During his lifetime he preferred to be called Erwin, which was his grandmother's surname or he went by the initials J.E. His mother died when he was seven and he spent most of his time growing up with his much older sister and family and finally his only brother Samuel Alexander Newton and family. On November 11, 1900 he married Lula Cleveland Lee in Lampasas County, Texas. Their first four children were born in Texas before they moved to the northeastern prairie of New Mexico in 1912. Two more children were born to this couple in New Mexico. The two brothers brought their families to this area to prove homestead land. They lived in Springer and worked on the weekends preparing their land for their families. Their first Post office address was the old Abbott over by the railroad tracks southwest of the Roy, Clayton highway turnoff. They built a small school called Newton school on land given by Samuel. Later the school was moved over by old Abbott. All six of the Newton children went to this school. The school became well known for its basketball teams and its judging teams. Later when the school was closed one of the buildings was moved to the new Abbott at the "Y" of the Clayton,Roy highways. J.E. and Lula sold their land after 1935 and moved into Springer, New Mexico where J.E. worked until well into his eighties. They continued to live in Springer until they both passed away.
