While living in Missouri, Garland and Penelope lived in Monroe and Clay counties. The 1850 Clay County census lists not only the Gentrys there but also: Robert James, 31 years old. Baptist preacher; Serelda James, 28 years old; Alexander Franklin James, ten years old; Jesse Woodson James, four years old; Susan James, nine months old.
Garland and Penelope lived near the parents of the notorious Frank and Jesse James, and Penelope was midwife at Jesse's birth. She was the first one to dress the future Missouri badman.
