Sometimes at night, however, he would sneak out to the music clubs of Henry Street in Roanoke, Va., and play jazz and blues with his cousin Clyde "Fats" Wright. Pullen drew on all those influences to become a major free-jazz pianist whose work ddrew comparisons to Thelonious MOnk and Cecil Taylor. He accompanied vocalists Nina Simons and Arthur Prysock in the 1960s and worked in bassist Charles Mingus band in the 1970s.. He recorded more than 20 albums leading his own groups, and dozens more as a sideman. He died of cancer in 1995
