I listened to my Grandpa's stories around a camp fire, too, on his farm. I remember listening to coyotes howling in the background and cows making noises in the barn and, yes, lots and lots of dogs patrolling the property making sure all was safe and secure. With today's noises and crowds, it's those "old fashioned" moments that I miss most - and learned the most - just by listening.

Those "hunts" are always peaceful and calming, they still do it in my area. Rest Gently.

I just love this man... he is someone that I would love to have known... he and my Daddy would have been good friends... reminds me of my Mama telling the story of how my Daddy and his friends went coon hunting way back then just after they were married and he sneaked in late that night and let a coon loose in the house while she was sleeping... they also went night fishing on the creek setting out trot lines and spent the night on the creek bank around the campfire... "Oh for those good old days"... I remember that one of Daddy's dogs was named Blue but don't remember the name of the other one...

Actually, your stories make perfect sense to me. My grandfather could identify his "hounds" by their sound as they ran about on his farm land, too. I miss those stories now that he's gone. Mr. Whitlatch seemed to have such a sweet expression on his face. May he rest in peace and his stories last forever...and peace to you, as well.
