Why, Dearest Colonel did you let yourself be off guard to be killed by the secesh believer. you knew from all of your study that a soldier never walks anywhere without his attention focused on his surroundings, I understand why you took the flag down, you could have waited until the regiment was safely back at camp.Your example & what happened afterward shos me to beware of sneaky the devil is at stealing everything from us. I'm sorry you died as I agree with Gen. Lee you wou have made a fine General Thanks.

Dearest Colonel Ellsworth, I'have been researching your life story & May I thank you for the pure example you tried to set for the men in your regiments, & the Lincoln boys, Willie,Tad, & a small way Robert.& all who followed you in years. Thank you for being a blessing in time of war & peace,& although human, showing what a man really is. I'm sorry Dame Fortune finally smiled when you died, helping your dream for your parents come true along with a real regiment you would have loved. you were never a nobody, Colonel, you were a man with your Father's eyes.sincerely, a believer

I recently visited your gravesite and was appalled at the poor upkeep of the section of the cemetery in which you rest. The city of Mechanicville should be embarrassed to have the grave of a hero like you so neglicted. I salute you Col. Ellsworth.

Sir
My great great grandfather fought beside you as a volunteer Fire Zouave.
Due to that, I have been able to obtain his records and information I would not have learned otherwise. I salute you.
