FOUGHT IN DESERT STORM.
Roy R. "Bob" Bennett Sr., 69, of 229 N. Sheridan St., died Jan. 4, 2010, at the V.A. Medical Center in Des Moines.He was born Nov. 1, 1940, in Ottumwa to Robert "Peg" and Helen Myers Bennett. He married Alice Rominger Jan. 14, 1967.A resident of Ottumwa all of his life, he had served in the U.S. Army.Roy had worked as an orderly at Ottumwa Regional Health Center, had also worked at John Morrell and Co., Burlington Northern Railroad and in maintenance at River Hills Nursing Home.He was a member of Ottumwa Baptist Temple and a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans. Roy enjoyed hunting, fishing and hunting for mushrooms.Surviving are his wife, Alice; three sons, Roy (Carrie) Bennett Jr., Carl "Ed" Bennett and Albert (Sarah) Bennett, all of Ottumwa; a daughter, Lori Bennett of Ottumwa; seven grandchildren, Amanda, Jacob, Jazzmyn, Christopher, Hanna, Jocelynn and Caleb; and a great-granddaughter, Elizabeth; two sisters, Edith Maxine Songer and Alice (Charles) Eaton, both of Ottumwa; and two brothers, James Sellwood and Maley (Mary) Sellwood, both of Ottumwa.He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, John Bennett; two sisters, Ollie Lanigan and Mabel Songer; and a brother, Charles "Bucky" Sellwood.Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Ottumwa Baptist Temple; Pastor Randy Miller officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery with military services conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 6-8 p.m.Memorials may be made to Ottumwa Baptist Temple.
