Zoo officials say the giraffe, named Morefu (mo-RAY'-foo), a male, was euthanized after veterinarians determined he was no longer responding to medications for arthritis and other health conditions related to age.

The giraffe, who arrived at The Birmingham Zoo in 1985, stood 18' tall and weighed approximately 2,140 lbs.

FYI: Giraffes typically have a lifespan of about 13 years. However, they can live up to 25 years in captivity.
