HOBSON, Merritt Sylvester was born August 6, 1834 in Naperville, DuPage County, Illinois the son of Bailey Hobson and Clarissa Stewart. He began his education in the common school continuing until he was seventeen years old. He then attended the Seminary at Warrenville for two years. At the age of twenty-one he began the study of law at Poland, Ohio, where he graduated at the end of the year. He entered into a law partnership with Judge Walter Blanchard for a year, and then went into partnership with his brother-in-law, John Haight. He married Elmira Kentner July 10, 1857 in Mahoning County, Ohio and they were the parents of four children, Alvina, Hazel, Bailey E. and Clayton K. He was a veteran of the Civil War and served as 1st Lieutenant of Company K of the 13th Illinois Infantry. He was initiated an Entered Apprentice on April 19, 1859 and passed to the degree of Fellowcraft on January 10, 1860. He died January 9, 1867 in Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa and was buried in the Naperville Cemetery.
