"MRS. BETHANY DIES"

"Mrs. Mattie Bethany, wife of Rev. W. E. Bethany, died in Laurel, Miss., yesterday afternoon. She was 22 years old and the daughter of the late J. W. and Mrs. Herring and had taken an active interest in work with the Assembly of God Church. Funeral arrangements have not been completed pending arrival of the body this afternoon. Besides her husband she leaves, her mother, Mrs. J. W. Herring, four sisters, Mrs. E. Balius and Mrs. D. E. Smith of Flint, Mich., Ruth and Gladys Herring of Biloxi; and three brothers, James, of Flint, and John and Frank Herring of Biloxi. The funeral will be held from the family residence, 707 East Division street."

Bradford O'Keefe Funeral Records, Book 17, pg 219: Mattie was 22 years, 6 months, 27 days old when she died giving birth to a stillborn boy who was buried with her. She was the wife of Rev. Edgar W. Bethany, and the daughter of J. W. Herring of Clayton, Al. and Ruth Harper of Leighton, Al. The cause of death was a pulmonary embolism.
