General Joe, you were a very unusual man. Born Nov. 13, died Oct. 31, the Lord took you home when the spiritual veil was thinnest. Angels must have been watching over you, because you should have died a thousand deaths on the battlefield, sitting atop that snow white horse. You led from the front and you wanted your men to see you. But sharpshooters could see you just the same. Lincoln was practically psychic and he could see through people - at a dark time in our nation's history when trust and loyalty were hard to come by. It is noteworthy that of all the generals, you were the dearest to his heart.

General, you restored a broken and demoralized army to the nation--your greatest service. And when other commanders shunned the sick, wounded, and dying as a nuisance, you were always careful of the welfare and well-being of the men in your camps and treated them with great tenderness and respect. You are loved and remembered for your kind heart and generous spirit.

We honor you, Gen. Hooker, a native of Massachusetts and Oregon pioneer who lived here with your family in the time preceding and during the first years of Oregon statehood before the start of the Civil War. You had completed overseeing the construction of Oregon's military roads, and word came of the fall of Fort Sumter. A true patriot, you went east to offer your services to President Lincoln. 150 years later we honor your courage and loyalty.
