Eleanor Evelyn Griswold

Our beautiful and elegant mother, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother, Eleanor Evelyn Griswold, nee Rinehart, left this life on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009 to be reunited with her husband, John Curtis, her beloved grandson, Christopher Topa, her mother, father, sisters and brother, and other friends and family who have gone before. She will be very much missed by her children, Mary Beth (Jerry) Wolford, Nicholas (Toni) Griswold, Antoinette "Toni" (John) Kniola and Matthew (Erica) Griswold; grandchildren, Derrick, Amanda, Jonathan, Ashleigh; and great-grandchildren, Heather, Cody and Aerianna.
Evelyn or Evie as she was known to friends and family, loved nothing more than being with her family. Many were the "family" vacations taken by the extended Griswold clan and the enjoyment of these times will be long remembered.
Evelyn was born in Mt. Blanchard, Ohio on Nov. 20, 1917. Upon her high school graduation, she went to Ft. Wayne Business College; and from there came to Michigan City as an employee of Josam Manufacturing. During the years she was employed there, she met her future husband, John, and they were married on Sept. 13, 1941. They enjoyed a fulfilling and happy lifetime together, until July 14,1999, when she was predeceased by John.
After the birth of her first child, Mary Beth, Evelyn took on the most demanding job of a lifetime; raising her four children to adulthood. She was at home for her family, when the children returned from school and when her husband came home from a long day of work.
For their pleasure, Evelyn and John enjoyed several years of square dancing; and the family took many vacations together - sometimes just weekend trips when all the children were home; and at other times, with their adult children and families. The "Griswold Family Vacations" included trips to Disneyworld, Mackinac Island, and houseboating on Lake of the Ozarks for more extended periods, where memorable times were had by all.
In later years, after her children were gone, Evelyn tried her hand at volunteer work at St. Anthony Hospital; indulged herself in art classes for which she had an enormous talent; and spent time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as they grew, saying that it made her feel "young" again. Evelyn will be eternally young to us, her children. We will always think of her as the mother waiting for us after school, soothing our hurts, supporting us in our adult lives, always being there for us; and we will miss her eternally too, until the happy day we are reunited with her in God's heaven.
Private family services will be conducted. Burial will take place in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City. The Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday in the chapel.
