James A. Quillman , an elementary school teacher for 20 years in the Ferguson-Florissant School District, died Sunday (Dec. 31, 1989) of cancer at DePaul Health Center in Bridgeton. He was 44.
Mr. Quillman,of Florissant, taught the fifth and sixth grades at Central School in the Ferguson-Florissant district for the last 10 years. He previously taught for 10 years at the district's Graham School.
Mr. Quillman had been active in a number of historic restorations in north St. Louis County. In 1982, he found and restored the 100-year-old school bell at Central School, the oldest school in the Ferguson-Florissant district. Since its restoration, the bell has been rung at the start of each school day.
He also was instrumental in taking apart the Trampe log cabin log-by-log and helping to rebuild it several years ago at the Little Creek Wildlife Area in North County.
Mr. Quillman grew up in Dellwood and in 1969 got a bachelor's degree from the University of Missouri at St. Louis, where he subsequently received a master's degree. While at the university, Mr. Quillman was one of the founding fathers of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.
Among survivors are his wife, Sandie Quillman ; two daughters, Jennifer Quillman and Lisa Quillman , all of Florissant; his parents, Harrell D. and Olivia Quillman , of Edwardsville; and a brother, Harrell J. Quillman of St. Peters.
