Alexis C. Burdick was born on August 21, 1846, in Noble, La Porte County, Indiana, his father, Joel C, was 45 and his mother, Mary (Baker) Burdick, was 38. At the age of 3 years the family moved to Whiteside County, Illinois, and was raised on a farm near Sterling. When just 15 years of age Alexis enlisted in the Union Army during the American Civil War, serving in the Company. I, 12th Cavalry, Illinois, Volunteers, Known as McClellan Dragoons from 1861-1865. He was twice wounded in battles. He married Annie Elizabeth Stafford on August 17, 1884, in Dane, Wisconsin. Annie is believed to be Alexis 3rd wife and they had one child during their marriage. Alexis occupation was a Police Officer where he rose through the ranks to Sergeant and Lieutenant. His last duty station was at Chicago's Hyde Park Station from 1888 to his death. He was well known throughout the town of Lake, and passed away on Tuesday, October 8, 1902, after a short illness at Union Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, at the age of 57, and was buried at Oak Woods Cemetery.
