from The LaHarper, LaHarpe, IL, March 13, 1925:
"Mrs. Emily Bainter
Mrs. Emily Bainter died at her home south of Stronghurst, Ill., on Monday evening, March 9, 1925.
Her maiden name was Emily Snoots and she was born at Muskingum county, Ohio, October 25, 1832. She was married to Peter Cranston Bainter, of Adamsville, Ohio, September 9, 1852. Two years after their marriage they came to LaHarpe, making the trip by boat from Zanesville, Ohio, to Warsaw, and thence across country to LaHarpe. Here he secured work as a farm hand, receiving $8 a month. After a year they rented a farm and by hard work and frugality, six years later, they had enough money to buy 80 acres of land. This land had no fences and the prairie grass was as high as a man's head. There were many hardships to be endured, but this brave man and woman won their battle with these difficulties and when he died August 4, 1921, at the age of 92 years, he owned 900 acres of the best farm land in Henderson county.
Through all these years his wife was his constant companion and helper and their home was a home of happiness. Every one of their acquaintances was welcomed and enjoyed a day's visit there, no matter whether they were old or young.
After the death of her husband, Mrs. Bainter continued to reside in the old home and to entertain the friends who came, but on Thanksgiving day, 1923, she fell and broke her hip and had been unable to walk since. She has had the best of care and during the long days was always cheerful and grateful for the things that were done for her.
Fourteen children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Bainter, seven of whom survive. They are Will H. Bainter, Mesdames Nancy Veech, Jane Navens, Ada Beckett, Adell Doak, Addie Ross and Orpha Lovitt.
The funeral will be held at the home Thursday morning at 10 o'clock. Burial in the mausoleum at Stronghurst."
