Clinton was born to a railroad worker and homemaker. At 33, he married 17-year-old Ethel Downey and in a short time moved to the Central Valley of California. Ethel followed in 1915 They lived in tents on the Kings river until they finally saved enough money to buy a home. Clinton worked as a ditch digger, using dynamite to break through the hard pan of the valley. He nearly died after an accidental shooting. His family struggled financially, but managed by his wife and daughter, Joyce, earning money by packing fruit.
