Thomas Allebaugh

Suggested Edit: Former Harrisonburg High School football standout Thomas Scott Allebaugh, who was seriously injured in a crash in North Carolina last winter, was killed Friday morning when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into a tree.

Allebaugh, 18, of Harrisonburg, died instantly from head injuries in the 8:15 a.m. crash on U.S. 11, state police reported.

Allebaugh was returning home after working the 11 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. shift at the Walker Manufacturing plant south of Harrisonburg when his northbound car drifted off the left side of the road about .8 miles south of Va. 721 near Melrose Caverns, police said.

The 1980 Chevette slammed head on into a tree. Allebaugh was traveling alone.

He had been seriously injured January 17, in a two car crash on Interstate 85 in North Carolina. At the time, he was riding with former HHS football teammate Bruce Hedrick and was going to visit Hedrick's brother at Elon College.

Allebaugh suffered head injuries and was treated 10 days at North Carolina University Hospital before being transferred to Rockingham Memorial.

Hedrick, who suffered facial cuts in the North Carolina crash, was hospitalized only two days before being released.

Allebaugh was the 16th person to die on Rockingham County Highways this year, the eighth in two months and the second in July.

He was born September 9, 1962 in Harrisonburg and was a son of Thomas N. and Elizabeth Hannah Allebaugh of Harrrisonburg.

He was a second team All Shenandoah District football selection last fall for Harrisonburg High after lettering his three previous seasons. The 5 foot 11, 170 pound tight end hauled in 32 passes for 466 yards and four touchdowns during the 1980 season, in which the Blue Streaks finished 9-2-1. He also played basketball, baseball and ran track.

Allebaugh had planned to attend Randolph-Macon College, where he had signed a grant in aid to play football. He was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Harrisonburg, where he taught Sunday School and had served as an acolyte. He also was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and SPADES. As a sophomore at Harrisonburg High, he received the Hugh O'Brien Leadership Award.

Surviving in addition to his parents, are two sisters, Anne Lee and Erin Elizabeth, a brother, Charles Patrick , all at home. A grandfather, C.R. Allebaugh of Lacey Spring, and two step grandmothers, June Hannah of Staunton and Frances Allebaugh of Lacey Spring.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Emmanuel Episcopal Church by Dr. W.L. Mengebier, Dr. Carl Swanson and the Rev. James Lincoln.

Burial will be in Lacey Spring Cemetery.
