Alton Jewel Bertels joined the US Marine Corps on Feb 21, 1938. He had attained the rank of Sergeant and was a guard at the US Embassy in Peking when he was ordered to surrender to the Japanese on Dec 8, 1941. He interned in the POW camp at Kiangwan, China. He died there on Mar 23, 1945 from pulmonary TB. His body was cremated. He received the Prisoner of War medal posthumously.
