Mr. Billings and Mr. Kennedy were roommates at Choate and then at Princeton before Mr. Kennedy transferred to Harvard. Although Mr. Billings never served the President in an official capacity, he was a frequent guest at the White House.
He was born in Pittsburgh and graduated from Princeton. He served with the Navy in the Pacific during World War II, then attended the Harvard Graduate School of Business.
Mr. Billings was active in all of John Kennedy's campaigns as well as those of Senator Robert F. Kennedy. He headed the committee that oversaw the construction of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. He was also a trustee of the Kennedy Library at Harvard.
