Born in St. Louis, the former Ruth Coleman went to work as a librarian for the Soulard branch of the St. Louis Public Library shortly after her high school graduation.
Mrs. Bell worked there for 11 years before she joined the Post-Dispatch in 1942. She worked as reference librarian at the newspaper for 33 years.
While working in news research, she met John R. Bell Sr., a city editor and reporter for the Post-Dispatch. They married in 1966.
When she retired in 1975, Mrs. Bell told a Post-Dispatch reporter that her most memorable day at the newspaper had been the day that President Franklin D. Roosevelt died.
"The whole department had been planning to go out to dinner together that day," Mrs. Bell told the Post-Dispatch in 1975. "Instead, everybody worked almost all night, going through the clippings for use in stories the next day."
Mrs. Bell was active in the Henrietta Scheetz Guild of Grace Episcopal Church in Kirkwood.
Her husband died in 1984.
