You sound like a brave man and a good man who thought for himself. I am sorry that people were not kind to you when you fell ill in later life. Rest in peace and joy and love forever now, Horace, in the shelter of God's arms.

You will always be remembered for your remarkable editorial work on the "New York Tribune", and your support of Lincoln in the Civil War. Aside from one term in Congress you never held political office. Your insanity and death were a terrible price to pay for that Presidential nomination.

You are a far distant cousin, sir, through geneological studies. Though you reached high level of achievement, tragedy and great disappointment sought you out in the latter half of your life. You are remembered, Horace Greeley

Horace Greeley (February 3, 1811 – November 29, 1872) was an American newspaper editor, a founder of the Liberal Republican Party, a reformer, a politician, and an outspoken opponent of slavery. The New York Tribune (which he founded and edited) was America's most influential newspaper from the 1840s to the 1870s and "established Greeley's reputation as the greatest editor of his day

The following was written in 1874. Just thought it was interesting enough to share.Clinton PublicDeWitt County, IllinoisThursday, November 19, 1874The grave of Horace GREELEY, at Greenwood Cemetery, New York, is still unmarked, and apparently uncared for. Someone who has been there lately says there is no mound over it, the line between the new-laid sod and the old only distinguishing it from the rest of the hill. An iron park stool has been placed at the foot of the grave, and a small Fourth of July flag and the old cane of the great editor are by it. The spot is difficult to find, and the only information the laborers can give is that Mr. Greeley's grave is over by the fountain somewhere. If the trifles that mark it were removed, the exact spot of the grave would be obliterated.

I still would have voted for Grant, scandals and all. I just have reservations about the kind of leader you might have been for our country.
