Noyes & Francis Tyler Canfield were early settlers in Dearborn County, Indiana. A biographical sketch of Perry Canfield (Noyes/Edwin/Wesley/Perry) in "History of Dearborn County, Indiana" (1915) cites the oral family history of the Canfield surname, and lists the genealogy of Noyes and his descendants. In the section on Hogan Twp "Noyes Canfield came to the county in 1800, stopped for a time with Doctor Percival in Lawrenceburg, and helped him erect the first house in the place. He afterwards removed to a piece of land he entered on Hogan Creek at the foot of the hill north of Wilmington, where he lived until his death. He was the father of Edwin Canfield, of Wilmington, and Cyrus Canfield, at one time justice of the peace in Hogan township." Noyes is listed on pg 21 of the 1807 Indiana Census and land grant records from 12 March 1829 show purchases in Section 31 and Section 6, but oral tradition has that he lived most of his life on the banks of North Hogan Creek.

I have trouble with the fact that Noyes is listed on the 1860 census living with Henry, who was on the farm, age 79, and the census was taken in August 1860 and the fact that everyone has always listed April 1860 as the death date for Noyes. For many years I thought the date was 1869, while everyone else has always said it was 1860. I have recorded his date as 1860, but have never found a will. It is possible that because he died in April just before the census was enumerated in August, he was included enumerated as being alive in 1860. I believe this to be the standard practice starting with the 1850 census to include those that were living 12 months prior to the census enumeration ---dhintx
