Chester Laverne O'Brien, Jr. was born on May 18, 1938 in Taft, California to Chester and Betty O'Brien.

He served in the United States Marine Corps as a Lance Corporal. LCPL O'Brien, Jr. was assigned to the 3rd BN, 3rd Marines, 3rd MARDIV, III MAF as a rifleman.

LCPL O'Brien was injured by an explosive device on March 2, 1966, and died of his injuries on March 5, 1966 in the Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam. He was 27 years old.

He was buried with full military honors at the West Side District Cemetery in Taft, California. LCpl O'Brien received the Purple Heart which was presented to his parents.

His survivors include his parents, his sister, and other family members.
