CAROLYN JOAN COATES (NEE SPRINKLE) DENMARK, SC/ HESSVILLE, IN

Carolyn Joan Coates, age 79, of Denmark, SC, formerly of Hessville, passed away Tuesday, August 4, 2009.
She is survived by her daughter, Polly Sue (Mark) West of Denmark, SC, with whom she made her home; two sons: Charlie B. (Graceanne) Coates of Hammond and Dennis A. (Donna) Coates of Edmond, OK; eight grandchildren: Jessica, Jonathon, Rachel, Joseph, Aurora, Megan, Sarah and Joshua; nine great grandchildren: Alex, Carolyn, Charlotte, Lily, Abby, Rebbeca, Dax, Reese and Kaiser; several nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.
Preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Bobby D. Coates; her parents: Azzie and Rachael Thorne Sprinkle; one brother; and two sisters. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 10, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at Bocken Funeral Home, 7042 Kennedy Ave., Hammond (Hessville), IN with Pastor Jeffery Hannon officiating. Burial will follow at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville. Friends are invited to meet with the family on Sunday, August 9, 2009 from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00 -8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Joan was a lifetime resident of the Calumet Area until 2006 when she moved to be near her family. She was a member of Hessville Baptist Church for over 40 years and was currently a member of Bethel Park United Methodist Church in Denmark, SC. Joan retired after 25 years from the School City of Hammond, working as a cook at Orchard Drive School. Joan loved gardening, reading, traveling, her church and her family. She will be remembered for the loving kindness she showed to her family and friends. Her favorite pastime was spending time with her grandchildren. Memorials may be made in Joan's memory to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 1261 E. 86th Street, Suite E-2, Indianapolis, IN 46260.
