Enlisted in the Union Army on Sept. 4, 1861. Was in the 61st Pennsylvania Regiment infantry, company I, led by Capt. Green. Was discharged Jan. 27th, 1863, with a Surgeon's Certificate of Disability.
According to the unit History, he was mustered into the 23rd Pennsylvania Regiment (Birney's Zouaves) on Sept 1, 1861. He went to camps Graham and Clark. While at Camp Clark 4 companies were transferred to the 61st PA in March 1862. He fought in the Battle of Fair Oaks in Virginia on May 31, 1862. In that battle he was wounded when a shell struck a tree limb, which crashed onto his back. He was later shot in both legs during a skirmish at Crampton's Gap, on the way to Sugar Loaf (South?) Mt., MD, on Sept. 14, 1862 while the enemy was trying to capture a train.
He was honorably discharged on Jan. 27, 1863.
