Amherst County, Virginia was formed in a.d 1761, from the Southern parts of Albemarle County. The county was named for Lord Amherst, known as the "Conqueror of Canada" also the first ever to use biological warfare infecting blankets with contagions (Small-Pox). LORD Jeffery Amherst was named Governor of Virginia, although he never came to the colony.First Nations - Native Americans were the first humans to populate the area. The original county seat had been in Cabelsville, now Colleen, Nelson County, Va. that County Seat is Lovingston now.Amherst now at this point, the county seat was moved to the village of Five Oaks, later renamed Amherst. The present county courthouse was built in a.d. 1870 and has served the county ever since. On a historically interesting important note, Amherst County produced more Confederate soldiers per capita than anywhere else in the C.S.A.
