A localized typhoid epidemic occurred at the University of Virginia in the winter of 1829. William's brother, Patrick died at the University on Jan.28, 1829—about 20 students in all became ill. Soon the other students were sent home. William Aylett, also a student at the University, was sent home—he died of typhus two weeks later at Montville. The college reopened on April 1.
