Elizabeth Jane Hawkins was the first child born to Solomon James Hawkins 1822 – 1892 and Mary James 1822 – 1870. Her siblings were: William Franklin Hawkins* 1848 – 1945, he married first Louisa J. Walker "Eliza" and second Winnie Eliza Gulley; Ruffus J. Hawkins 1850 – 1884, he married Hannah Elkin; Lizzie Hawkins 1851 – 1910, she married John Mason; Samuel Alexander Hawkins 1854 – 1939; he married Malaha Ann Cline; Noah W. Hawkins 1859 – 1921, he married Sarah Elizabeth Cobble; and Minerva "Nerve" Hawkins 1862 – 1938, she married Jacob "Jake" L. Wolfe. Elizabeth had half siblings from her fathers second wife Nancy H. Cantrell, They were: Isham Mc "Mack" Hawkins 1871, he married a lady named Hattie, her maiden name is unknown; Charles Hawkins 1873 –1953, he married first Mattie Walker, and second Mae Arnott; Lue Verna "Verne" Hawkins 1880.

Elizabeth accepted William Allen Buhcanan's proposal, and they were wed on Oct. 30 1873. Together they had 6 children: Lucinda Loport Buchanan 1874 – 1950, she married James Martin Synamon; James Allen Buchanan 1876 – 1940, he married Mattie Peavler; George Alexander Buchanan 1877 – 1936, he married Marthia "Mattie" Ellen Gibson; Mary Elizabeth Buchanan 1880 – 1954; Chester Venoy Buchanan 1881 – 1944, he married Viola Knox; Joseph Andrew Buchanan 1887 – 1946, he married Katherine; and Effie M Buchanan 1890.

The 1900 census revealed that Allen and Elizabeth were living on a farm that they owned in the 12th district South of Stage Road in Hawkins Co., Tennessee. Living at home were Mary E., Venoy C., Joseph A., and Effie M.

A very sad day arrived on March 17, 1904. Death claimed Elizabeth's dear William Allen Buchanan. A couple of days later his wife, children and friends gathered at a very pretty burial site at the Quarryville Cemetery to bid the beloved husband, father and friend farewell.

The 1910 census found Elizabeth living in District 2 of Hawkins Co. at the home of her son Joseph A. and Catherine.

The 1920 census revealed that Elizabeth was now living with her daughter Lucinda and her husband, and 8 grandchildren.

On Sept. 26, 1926 The Lord called Elizabeth home. Once again children and friends gathered at the Quarryville Cemetery to bid farewell to a beloved mother, grandma and friend. (research and bio by Audrey DeCamp Hoffman)
