Enlisted April 26, 1918 and initially went into the Army at Fort Dodge, Iowa, April 28, 1918 – May 14, 1918 for training and then onto Fort Travis, Texas, May 17, 1918 – June 5, 1918 which would have suggested that both of these camps were just stopping points before being shipped overseas. He was placed in Company F of the 315th Engineers, 90th Division while at Fort Travis.

The HMS Hempstead brought him to Liverpool, England on the June 29, 1918. On the military record it indicates that he participated in Puvenville, France and later at Meuse-Argonne offensive and St. Mihiel battles. Charles was given an honorable discharge June 26, 1919 and about one year after his service was completed he received a Bonus of $225.
