He was born and raised on a farm outside of New Salem, N. D., the oldest son of Ralph and Anna Hoff. As did many in his generation, George enlisted in the US Army during WWII and served as a German interpreter in Patton's 3rd Army. He loved being a soldier and made it his career, subsequently serving in Korea and Vietnam. The Silver Star, Bronze Star and the Purple Heart were among his many awards.
Upon retirement George and his family settled in Bismarck, N. D., where he was an agent for Farmer's Insurance. In 1975, he accepted a position as regional representative for Sunshine Mutual Insurance in Montana, serving for many years. Throughout the past 34 years, George has been active in the community, serving as a member of the Helena Citizens board and leading the effort to restore one of Helena's trolley cars. He was also active in Germans from Russia Society and the American Genealogical Society.
George was preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel; his father and mother; brothers, Ralph and Matt; and a stepson, Richard.
A graveside service with military honors at the Montana State Veterans Cemetery, Fort Harrison, was held July 17, 2009. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
