John was born the son of Abednego Hodges and Sarah "Sally" Keen. His father, Abednego, was a neighbor to the Edward Richards, James Stewart, Zachariah Warren, and John Harger families; all living in Franklin County about 6 miles south of Rocky Mount.

There was a lot of selling of property, standing surety for marriages, and witnessing official documents among the families of that era. Mary Hodges, John's sister, married David Richards [grandson of the above mentioned Edward Richards]. Many official documents exist for those events, which brings to life their times.

John grew to age and married Zachariah Warren's daughter, Mary "Polly" Warren, in 1811.
John served in the War of 1812 in Capt Jones' Co Mtd VA Mil
from Mar 9-Jun 2, 1814.

A wonderful friend, Stella Schilling, braved the elements and dense foliage to photograph John's stone marker with this much inscription legible: "John Hodges, This Our Father, Died June 25 (broken) 77, [then the long scripture which we couldn't read. Unfortunately, the area where it would have told his age was where the stone was broken.]
