Social Reformer, Illustrator. As a child growing up in Covington, Kentucky, he learned many stories about pioneer Daniel Boone and other early American pioneers. That childhood love for Boone motivated him to establish "The Society of the Sons of Daniel Boone." In 1905, this group became known as "The Boy Pioneers" and became the largest pre-scouting boys club in America. He embraced the Boy Scout movement that came to America from England in 1911, merging his "Boy Pioneers" with the Scouts. He served as the Boy Scouts of America's first national chairman, holding that position until his death. Affectionately known as "Uncle Dan," he designed the American Boy Scout uniform and emblem adding the American eagle and shield to the emblem. He was a famous illustrator as well. His drawings and articles were published in "St. Nicolas' Magazine" and "Youth's Companion." He was also chosen to illustrate Mark Twain's "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court." He received the only Gold Eagle Badge ever awarded and was given the Roosevelt Award for his distinguished service. A mountain in Alaska, near Mount McKinley is called Mt. Beard in his honor. The Daniel Carter Beard Bridge, crossing the Ohio River in Cincinnati, Ohio, is named for him.
