Manly and Dr. Samuel P. Langley, Director of the Smithsonian Institution worked on creating a flying machine. Manly built a powerful lightweight engine called "The Manly-Baltzer 5 Radial Engine" On December 8, 1903 he climbed into the cockpit of their flying machine from a houseboat deck on the Potomac River. But one of the cable supports to the wings snapped as the plane was launched, the craft caught on the launch rail, and it plunged into the river nearly drowned.
Nine days later on December 17, 1903 the Wright Brothers successfully made the first manned flight on the Kitty Hawk.
