William J. Alexander was born in 1836 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
He departed this life in 1892 in Van Buren, Arkansas at the age of 56.

In 1860 he lived in the Upper Division, Wilkes, North Carolina, with his sister Ada and brother-in-law William Morgan Barbour where he attended Law School.

He enlisted in the Civil War at age 25 on January 11, 1862
His rank at enlistment was 3rd Lieut serving the State of North Carolina. Commissioned an officer in Company H, North Carolina 37th Infantry Regiment on 20 Nov 1862.
Promoted to Full Captain on 18 Jun 1863.
Promoted to Full 1st Lieutenant on 03 May 1863.

In 1870 at the age of 34 he lived in Van Buren, Arkansas where he practiced law.
His sister and family were living with him.

On June 29, 1881 at the age of 45 he married Mary E. McBride in Van Buren.
