Surviving are his wife Okie Hurley Shumate; two sons; three daughters; fourteen grandchildren; one brother (Cyrus Shumate) and two sisters (Olivene Walls and Isadora Dolinger). Two sisters (Bessie and Mattie Shumate) and one brother (James Shumate) predeceased him.
