Leo E. Hake was the son of Lyman E. Hake and Nan Gale. He was the grandson of Levi Hake and Margarette Olive Spaulding Hake. He married Shirley Wallace on 19 December 1925. Shirley died on 29 June 1952. Leo then married Shirley's sister, Mildred Wallace Dearing on 5 July 1953.

Leo was employed by the Safeway Stores and by Darigold, where he was a truck driver and an ice cream maker. He was supervisor of the Kittitas County Housing Authority and served on the Ellensburg City Council.
