He was born in Allen County, Ohio. With his family moved to Anderson County, Indiana and later to Illinois.
He enlisted in 1861 in Co. C, 25th Illinois Infantry. He was in battle at Memphis and Chattanooga and campaigned through Tennessee and Georgia before being honorably discharged after 3 and half years.
He married his wife Annie Ray in Homer, Champagne County, Illinois in 1868.
In 1878 he moved to California with his family and settled on a ranch just North of Healdsburg. Where he stayed until about 1906 when he moved into Healdsburg due to failing health.
