Death of Wm. Rowe
Was Widely Known as a Prospector and Operator of Iron Ore Mines--His Age 95 Years.
William Rowe, one of this city's oldest and best known citizens, died of infirmities at 8 o'clock this morning, aged 95 years, at his residence, 1040 Penn St. Notwithstanding his advanced age, Mr. Rose was in fairly good health until a year ago. Last summer he enjoyed daily pedestrian trips through City Park and about the city. His appearance was that of a person much younger. Three weeks ago his condition became serious and he was bedfast from that time. He is survived by his widow, Julia (nee Vache) who is 80 years of age, and these children: Mrs. T.D. Maurer, Long Branch NJ, Mrs. A.F. Smith, Harry T. Rowe, William G. Rowe, Mary, Jennie and Thomas, this city, and a sister, Mrs. William Garber of St. David's near Phila.
Mr. Rowe belonged to the Episcopal Church and was a member of a number of secet organizations. He was born at Land's End, England, and was a son of John Rowe, a former resident here. He lived in this city the past 70 years. Mr. Rowe was from a family of prospectors. His father operated ore mines in Mexico and Cuba, and was the first person to conduct similar mines in Montgomery County. William Rowe, the son, was the first to discover iron ore on Mt. Penn, and was the first to open mines there. He worked them for many years and was very successful. He was a practical mining engineer, and years ago started a large iron ore mine in the vicinity of Boyertown. He was one of the first to find iron ore and copper in South Carolina, and prospected for gold with some success. He carried on operations in California and other States. At the age of 76 years he retired. Deceased lived in the house in which he died, for many years, and was a familiar figure in that section of the city. He had a wonderful memory for a man of his age.His reminiscences of Reading dating back mny years were very interesting. He was considered an authority on minerals and was frequently consulted by persons from all over this section.
